Miyoo Mini Flip - small clamshell handheld with big charm

We all know Miyoo. They make devices that are just plain good. And now they have also made a small foldable one. The Miyoo Mini Flip is one of those handhelds where you immediately understand why this model is popular: compact, convenient to carry around and just really fun to use. This really is a Pokémon machine and effortlessly plays everything up to PlayStation 1. So you can delightfully play Red, Blue, Yellow through to Emerald on this. And of course, what makes this totally cool is that you're not limited to just cartridges or titles you already own. There's also a whole world of homebrew and modern software for old systems to explore.

As you have come to expect from Miyoo, the build quality is good. The hinge has been improved for extra durability, and the device has a compact clamshell design that easily fits in your pocket or bag. The 2.8-inch IPS display with 750 × 560 resolution looks remarkably sharp for this size, and the built-in Wi-Fi and RTC make the device just a bit more modern than you might think at first glance.

As you are used to, you can also use OnionOS. We install that standardly on the device if you get an SD card with it. If you opt for an RG SD card, we will install a taster: our MIT Collection of open source games for which we have collected the rights, plus an exclusive demo of Goodboy Galaxy.

Why the Miyoo Mini Flip is special

What makes the Miyoo Mini Flip especially nice is that it does something we don't often see in this segment: a small clamshell handheld that doesn't look gimmicky, but is just well put together. Closed, it's super compact; opened, it feels instantly familiar. That makes it very suitable as a handheld that you really take everywhere with you.

The screen is really strong for such a small device. The resolution of 750 × 560 gives just a bit more sharpness than you would expect at this size. As a result, everything looks sleek and clear, which is especially nice with such a small screen. The Mini Flip also has a pleasant button layout and quiet buttons, so it just plays away nicely.

Also nice is that Miyoo has clearly taken the hinge seriously. This very model is made for frequent opening and closing, Miyoo stresses that the construction on this has been improved. As a result, it does not feel like a fragile toy, but a compact device that is really meant to be used often.

In addition, at RetroGear we immediately make it just a bit more fun. If you get an SD card with it, we'll put OnionOS on it. If you opt for an RG SD card, you'll also get a great start with our MIT collection and an exclusive demo of Goodboy Galaxy.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Miyoo Mini Flip suitable for long play sessions?
Not really. It is simply a bit too small for that. For short sessions, on the go or just in between, it is actually quite nice, but if you want to play for hours on end, a larger model is usually more comfortable. That also suits the size and clamshell design of this handheld.

Can I play PS2 on this?
No, this device is not powerful enough for that. The Mini Flip is really meant for lighter systems and a more compact, simpler setup.

Does the hinge feel solid?
Fortunately, that seems to be the case. Miyoo is actually putting extra effort into improved hinge construction with this model, and that is exactly what people are critically looking for with a small clamshell. It remains a movable part, of course, but this is clearly not designed as an afterthought.

Fits easily into a jacket pocket or small bag?
Yes, it really is made for that. Precisely because it folds up and remains compact, this is a handheld you can easily take with you without having to worry about the screen all the time.

Is OnionOS worthwhile on this model?
Absolutely. Especially with a Miyoo, a fine layer of software makes a lot of difference in daily use. If you get an SD card with it, that's why we put OnionOS on it by default so that you immediately start with a neater and more pleasant setup.

Is this a good choice if I am mainly looking for something small and simple?
Yes, then you are right here. The Mini Flip is not about brute force or a big screen, but about size, charm and convenience. That makes it especially attractive as a compact handheld for the side.

Is the screen large enough to use comfortably?
For this type of handheld, yes, but don't expect a spacious screen. The 2.8-inch panel is sharp and neat, only of course it remains a small device. So this is especially nice if you consciously opt for compact.

Does the battery last?
For such a small device, that's fine, but not exceptionally long. Miyoo mentions a 2500 mAh battery and about four hours of use, so for on-the-go or single sessions that's fine, but not really meant for an entire day of intensive use without charging.
